Plan Your Visit to The Carter House

Monday thru Saturday - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday – 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Carter House is closed only during the following holidays: New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, & Christmas Day.

Value Ticket:

The Battle of Franklin Trust has revised the existing commemorative value admission ticket to
now include admission to Lotz House as well as admission to The Carter House and Carnton Plantation.

Adult admission tickets for a guided tour at The Carter House are $15, and the same amount is charged at
Carnton Plantation. Admission to Lotz House is $10. The Battle of Franklin Trust is now offering adult visitors
a $30 admission ticket which includes a guided tour at all three historic homes. This is a $10 savings to the
adult visitor or a $20 savings per couple.

Carter House Guided Tours

Carter House is shown by guided tour. The first tour of the day is usually at 9:30 a.m. and the last is at 4:00 p.m. Each tour lasts about one hour. We do not have a specific tour schedule, but typically you will not have to wait more than 30 minutes for a tour after your arrival. On fall and spring weekday mornings, you may want to call before you come because school groups often visit those days. We will offer tours but they may be delayed slightly.

Your admission includes a brochure that includes a map and information about the grounds and outbuildings which you may explore on your own.

Museum Store

The Carter House Museum Store offers a wide selection of titles about the Battle of Franklin, the Tennessee Campaign of 1864, and other related topics. Dozens of other items are available as well, from relics to collectibles.

Length of Tour - Time depends on group size and may be adjusted but averages between 60-90 minutes
Group Tours at Carnton and Carter House.

We welcome groups! We have ample space for coach parking and turn-around as well as some different options to add so as to make your group tour special.

Our basic group rate, for 10 or more taking a house tour is $12.00 per person per site, Carnton or Carter House.

The total fee must be made the day of arrival in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Pay with two separate checks if attending both sites (a check for Carnton and a separate check for Carter House).

School tours
should be fun you the kids and the teachers so we make it easy! You can go to one home or both depending on your needs and time limits.

2) The teacher will then receive a confirmation email that includes helpful tips, house rules, and reminders to forward to other teachers and chaperones.

3) Payment- Please arrive a few minutes before your scheduled tour time to handle payment. Pay with two separate checks for each site visited. The total fee must be paid the day of arrival in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Please have the total number of students confirmed. Chaperones may pay separately.

We take it from here! Upon your arrival larger groups will be split into smaller groups of about 30 and a tour guide will then lead each group through the home and grounds if applicable. We will discuss the Battle of Franklin and learn about customs and everyday life of the 1860s through the eyes of the Carter and McGavock families.

Lunch on grounds (with permission) - Students may eat on the spacious lawn and you will need to provide blankets, etc. to sit on. In case of inclement weather, children may eat under the covered area outside the visitor center or return to their buses. All trash must be taken with you when you leave.

Museum Shop - Students may visit the museum store after their tour with teacher’s permission.
